Seven Killed In Three Wrong-Way Arizona Freeway Accidents in Week

Posted by Jay L. Ciulla | May 19, 2014 | 0 Comments

The Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Arizona Department of Transportation are holding emergency meetings due to seven people being killed in three wrong-way accidents on Arizona freeways in just one week.

AZCENTRAL reports that this morning's crash, a pickup truck and a passenger vehicle collided in the east-bound lanes of Loop 202 before 2 a.m. A 911 caller reported the driver heading westbound and many more calls followed. The Highway Patrol and police from Mesa and Gilbert were trying to intercept the pickup truck before it crashed less than 15 minutes later.

On Friday on I-17 a crash killed three members of a family, and another last Monday killed off-duty Mesa police Officer Brandon Mendoza and the wrong-way driver.

There were 80 wrong-way collisions in Arizona from 2009 to 2011, according to the most recent Arizona Department of Transportation figures. The total decreased each year, with 41 in 2009, 21 in 2010 and 18 in 2011.
