Distraction.Gov claims that at any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010. Cell phone and texting while driving as causation for motor vehicle accidents has been well-documented; however, they are not the only distractions from the primary task of driving. Other distractions include:
- Eating and drinking
- Talking to passengers
- Grooming
- Smoking
- Reading, including maps
- Using a navigation system
- Watching a video
- Adjusting a radio, CD player or MP3 player
Distracted driving is a hazard on America's roadways. In 2012 alone, 3,328 were killed in distracted driving crashes. Almost every day, I see car crashes caused by distracted driving in my Phoenix, Arizona personal injury law practice.
